Feline Joint ProblemsBy: Dr. Mark FrolickThere are few things more frustrating than having a cat that is suffering from issues that keep them from jumping. When we think about our beloved felines, we think of animals that can run and jump with ease. Unfortunately, that is not always the case. While there are many conditions that affect a cat's mobility, the two most common are arthritis and a condition called neuropathy. Arthritis The most common signs of arthritis and joint disease are stiffness and limping. This will be particularly evident after a cat has been sleeping or resting. In addition, there may be a reluctance to jump or climb stairs. There are many causes of arthritis in cats including trauma, infections, immune system disorders, hip dysplasia, and the erosion of joints. There is no known cure for feline arthritis. Many veterinarians will begin with a regimen of Glucosamine, then progress to an anti-inflammatory. It is imperative that you make your cat as comfortable as possible. One way to do this is to ensure that he/she does not place undue pressure on the affected joint(s). Neuropathy is a condition of nerve damage and may develop in poorly controlled diabetic cats.
Although getting your cat's blood glucose levels under control can show a degree of improvement in the condition, it may not be enough. Research has shown that the signs of neuropathy can be lessened with the use B12. Neuropathy sufferer "Yogi" on his 4 step PetStairz

Please note the plastic product shown in the before section of the photo. It is too small for the height of the furniture. It is slippery has a dangerous cut out and flips easily. We also evaluated the other plastic doggy step product and found the same results. The sharp corners are an accident waiting to happen. Underneath the flimsy cover are numerous perforated holes in the plastic frame which is unstable and dangerous. A claw and paw can easily get caught and injured during the climbing process. It is better for your pets joint for them to climb as opposed to jump onto hard surfaces. We recommend the foam pet step product manufactured by PetStairz. Basic care for your cat requires knowledge of its daily habits and individual personality. Your cat needs your attention and love just as much as dogs and other pets. |
